My work with liquid waterproofing is centred on the Winkler systems supplied and technically supported in Ireland—from exposed roofs, balconies and trafficked floors to bituminous-roof preparation and external or internal basement waterproofing. Selection starts with the substrate, moisture, water-pressure direction, exposure and detail strategy—not with the product name.

Liquid waterproofing is often discussed as though it were one technology. In practice, the product only becomes a system when its chemistry, substrate requirements, reinforcement, details, exposure and—below ground—the direction of hydrostatic pressure are considered together.

01 / CORE SYSTEMS

Exposed liquid membranes.

Six products form the core roof, balcony and trafficked-floor selection. Their most important difference is not colour or packaging—it is the condition and use in which each product is expected to perform.

01High-performance exposed membrane

WINKLER ONE®

Damp or wet substrates · 0°C to +45°C

The main choice where residual moisture, uncertain drying conditions or a wider application-temperature window make conventional water-based systems difficult to use.

02Vertical-grade liquid membrane

ONE® VERTICAL

Vertical details · damp or wet substrates

A thixotropic version developed for vertical applications, complex profiles and details where stability on the surface is as important as waterproofing continuity.

03Fast-drying water-based membrane

WINGUM PLUS® H₂O RAPID

Prepared dry substrates · +5°C to +35°C

A fibre-reinforced system for roofs and larger areas where fast rain resistance is important, but substrate moisture and application conditions remain tightly controlled.

04Smooth elastomeric membrane

2021

Prepared dry substrates · exposed finish

A water-based, UV-resistant liquid membrane used where a smooth continuous finish is required over a correctly prepared and dry substrate.

05Fibre-reinforced elastomeric membrane

Prepared dry substrates · distributed reinforcement

The fibre-reinforced development of 2021, providing reinforcement throughout the coating for substrates exposed to stress or vibration.

06Drive-over liquid waterproofing membrane

ONE® FLOORING

Damp or wet substrates · vehicle + industrial traffic

A coloured, UV-resistant ONE-system membrane for waterproofing and protecting concrete, tiled and mechanically sound asphalt floors exposed to vehicle or industrial traffic. Joints and movement still require a dedicated detail strategy.

Waterproofing, protection and treatment are not the same.

These products sit beside the core membranes but perform different jobs in the wider building-envelope strategy.

UNDER-TILE WATERPROOFING

WINGRIP® BITUMINOSO

Waterproofing + adhesion-promoting layer

A single-component polymer-bitumen membrane used beneath tiled finishes on terraces, balconies, bathrooms and shower areas. It is part of the covered build-up—not an exposed roof finish.

WIN BITUROOF

Levelling + slope-restoration paste

A ready-to-use bituminous paste for levelling aged bituminous membranes, restoring local falls and forming horizontal-to-vertical connection shells before the new waterproofing layer. It is a preparation product—not the final membrane.

Water-based anti-dust + adhesion treatment

A professional bituminous primer used to control dust and promote adhesion before laying heat-applied bitumen-polymer membranes. It is not a universal primer for every liquid waterproofing system.

An elastomeric protective coating for existing oxidised bituminous membranes. Its role is protection and service-life extension; substrate age and preparation remain critical.

A flexible aluminium protective coating for bituminous coverings. It provides a bright protective finish but should not be confused with the primary waterproofing membrane beneath it.

Deep-penetrating, non-film-forming protection

A transparent treatment for tiled balconies and terraces that penetrates through grout lines without changing the appearance. It does not replace movement-joint repair or bridge active cracks.

Which side of the water pressure?

External and internal basement waterproofing solve the problem from opposite faces of the structure. They are not interchangeable routes.

SYSTEM ROUTESCUDO SYSTEM®

A high-build, trowel- or spray-applied waterproofing system made with highly elastic resins and puncture-resistant additives. It is used on counter-ground walls, foundations and concrete structures, including vapour-barrier layers below foundation build-ups, subject to the approved substrate and detail design.

02NEGATIVE SIDE / INTERNAL

Control water from the accessible internal face.

SYSTEM ROUTEINTERNAL WATER-CONTROL BUILD-UP

The internal route must resist water pressure acting through the structure. Active ingress, damaged backgrounds and damp substrates are treated as separate conditions using BLOCKWATER, WINPLASTER and/or WINFIX WET in a project-specific sequence.

EXTERNAL / POSITIVE SIDEWaterproof before backfilling

The membrane is installed on the water-entry side, helping prevent the structure from becoming saturated.

INTERNAL / NEGATIVE SIDEWaterproof from inside

The treatment must remain bonded while water pressure acts through the wall or slab from behind.

INTERNAL REMEDIAL TOOLKIT

Stop, rebuild, then select the control layer.

An active leak, a damaged wall, counter-pressure moisture and a damp substrate are four different conditions. The project build-up may use some—not automatically all—of these materials.

01STOP

BLOCKWATER

Ultra-rapid cement mortar for stopping local active water ingress, including leakage under pressure. It resolves the active point before the wider waterproofing build-up is completed.

02BUILD

WINPLASTER

A single-component waterproof, fibre-reinforced plaster for forming thicker waterproof baseboards and treating concrete or plaster walls in layers up to 20–30 mm.

03COUNTER-PRESSURE

WINPOX CEMENT TIXO

A three-component thixotropic epoxy-cement mortar for humid surfaces affected by counter-pressure moisture. It can waterproof underground rooms, lift pits, floors and concrete pools while providing a vapour-barrier or resin-system base where specified.

04DAMP BASE

WINFIX WET

A two-component thixotropic epoxy-cement system formulated to cure on moist cementitious substrates. It creates a controlled base for subsequent resin finishes on underground rooms, lift pits, pools and floors where substrate moisture must be managed.

IMPORTANT DISTINCTION

SCUDO SYSTEM® is the external positive-side route. Internally, BLOCKWATER stops local active ingress, WINPLASTER rebuilds and waterproofs the background, WINPOX CEMENT TIXO treats counter-pressure moisture, and WINFIX WET creates a two-component epoxy-cement base on moist cementitious substrates. None should be treated as a direct one-for-one alternative.

05 / DETAILING & REINFORCEMENT

The field membrane is only part of the system.

The correct accessory depends on whether the detail is a corner, penetration, movement joint, wall-to-slab junction, reinforcement zone or local bituminous repair.

TECHNICAL SCOPE NOTE

This page describes the Winkler products supplied and supported through my professional work; it is not the complete Winkler catalogue and is not a project specification. ECOIMPRIMER, WIN BITUROOF, TIXO SEAL and the principal membrane must each remain in their correct role within a compatible build-up. Basement design must also consider water-table conditions, hydrostatic pressure, joints, wall-to-slab junctions, drainage, structural movement and the feasibility of external access. Final selection must follow a substrate assessment, project requirements, the current manufacturer technical data sheets and an approved system build-up.
